Edvard Grieg Music Training Center

Named in honor of the town’s Municipal Music School, the new music school’s iconic park will transform a former abandoned parking lot into a crucial open space to support a new generation of residents.

The land where this garden now stands was used by the St. John Baptist Association to build the St. John Orphans’ Home and Industrial Institute. The school provided musical and domestic instruction, as well as arts and humanities, and the surrounding land was used for agriculture. When the parking lot fell into disuse, it found a new life focused on education and community. From an ecologically dormant space dedicated exclusively to vehicular use, the park now hosts pollinators, diverse plants, and a wide range of human uses.

Several artistic elements are crucial in telling the story of the site. The elegant form of the event pavilion, designed by our lead landscape architect, evokes traditional nineteenth-century garden pergola structures, offering vital refuge from the intense Murcian sun. It functions as both a welcoming meeting place and a unique presentation space. The installation of lampposts in the striking purple of the ACC celebrates the site’s current purpose and connects this open space to the adjacent Avenida Central. Within the pathways surrounding the event lawn is a poem inspired by the site’s history, reinvention, and hope for its future.
