King Square, Cartagena
Plaza del Rey is a public space that reinvents the conventional landscape design medium by transforming and enhancing an old square attached to the Naval Arsenal of Cartagena into a citizen campus endowed with full environmental awareness, restoring the old flower beds and the alignment of Morus alba preexisting. Seeking Sustainable SITES certification and LEED Gold certification, this project aims to be a paradigm of urban ecology and sustainable development in Cartagena.
Designed to be atmospheric and inclusive, an extensive paved area allows for the insertion of a series of garden-like terraces that offer intimate and cozy corners, allowing users to immerse themselves in the botanical richness and delight in the gardening stimuli of the surrounding environment.
Plaza del Rey is the gateway to a revitalized agora, connected to the old city center and exemplifies adaptive reuse. The former dilapidated public space served only exclusively as an entrance to the underground parking lot built to service the nearby Naval Arsenal. The new landscaped habitat welcomes military, students, workers and visitors to a series of outdoor spaces geared towards users and citizens, in an environment once dominated by road traffic. Now, a stimulating process of revitalization of the urban environment projects a vision for the future based on environmental sustainability, inclusion and social equity.
