I A L assumed from the beginning that the new park and its attached public spaces would have to adapt to flooding. Instead of locating us at another elevation, over the water, International Agency Landscape moved most of the park out of the flood zone. This has allowed people to enjoy the connection with the sea winds, the millenary hills and the sweeping views over Cartagena, while ensuring that the trees we planted in 2008 grow into a promising and welcoming large urban forest.
John Fitzgerald Kennedy Park Phase 1 encompasses a six-acre plaza with seasonal flowers, seating, a small restaurant, and a playful maze; we have also added a ten acre sunny space that houses 150 new trees and play areas. Additionally, visitor amenities have been added, including new lighting, seating, and signage throughout the park.
The city of Cartagena has committed to investing more than 250,000 euros to achieve the adaptation and improvement of the park and its public spaces, as part of a multi-phase project that will begin in May 2022.
